9 End of Year School Keepsake Ideas (That Take Minutes, Not Hours)
9 end of year school keepsake ideas that take minutes, not hours
The last week of Term 4 is chaos. Concerts, class parties, report cards, and a school bag so full of artwork it barely zips. Here’s how to turn that pile into something your child will treasure.

Every year I tell myself I’ll sort it properly. And every year it ends up in a drawer, a box, or quietly in the recycling when no one’s looking.
If that’s you too, this list is for you. None of these take more than a few minutes, and together they turn a messy pile of paper into a story you can actually hold.
Capture who they were this year
Take the last day photo in the same spot as the first
Stand them by the same door, fence or tree you used on day one. Side by side, those two photos show a whole year of growing up in a way nothing else can.
Ask them the end of year questions
Sit down with a hot chocolate and ask the questions below. Write their answers word for word: the spelling, the funny logic, the grand plans.
- Who was your best friend this year?
- What was the best day of the year?
- What was the hardest thing you did?
- What are you most proud of?
- What do you want to be when you grow up?
- What are you excited about for next year?
Save a handwriting sample
Have them write their name, age and one sentence about their year. Those wobbly Prep letters will make you cry by Year 6.
Ask their teacher for a note
A few lines about who your child was this year is gold. Most teachers are happy to write one if you ask a week before term ends.
“One day my son won’t remember who his Prep teacher was, what he wanted to be when he grew up or the funny things he used to say after school.”

Keep the paperwork that matters
Keep the report, not every worksheet
The school report tells the whole story of the year. Keep it. The 40 maths worksheets can go.
Let them choose three pieces of artwork
Your child picks their three favourites to keep. Photograph everything else before it goes. They feel heard, and you get your kitchen bench back.
Label the class photo now
You think you’ll remember every name. You won’t. Write them on the back while your child can still tell you who everyone is.
Save the milestone extras in Year 6 and Year 12
Keep the graduation program, a photo of the signed shirt and a copy of any speech. These years deserve a little extra space.
Put it all in one place
This is the step that makes everything else count. A shoebox gets lost. A folder on your phone gets forgotten.
That’s why I created the Luxe School Years Memory Book. Every year from Prep to Year 12 has its own pages for photos, guided prompts like the ones above, teacher and parent notes, and a clear pocket for reports, awards and artwork. It takes about ten minutes at the end of each year.
Spend ten minutes filling in this year’s pages
Pop the photos in, copy their answers across, slip the report and favourite artwork into the pocket. Done for another year.
I started Vanda Baby after losing both my parents. What I wanted most afterwards wasn’t their things. It was the little details: their handwriting, their stories, the everyday moments no one thought to write down.
Our kids’ school years fly by. Ten minutes at the end of each one is all it takes to make sure those moments aren’t lost.
